botanical casting – 20th July
Led by artist Lydia Brockless, participants made a beautiful plaster cast using natural materials. they Learned how to make a simple clay-impression mould using grasses and flowers from the field, then took a highly detailed cast of their design.

field drawing – 27th July
In this relaxed session led by artist Lydia Brockless, participants were guided through a range of observational and expressive drawing exercises to help capture the wildness of this stunning natural landscape. they came away with a range of drawings in pencil, charcoal and ink.

zine making – 3rd august
participants made their own personal artist book with writer Sarah Davy in this relaxed workshop. sarah guided them through creative writing activities, and Lydia led some simple and mindful collage and drawing exercises, they created a unique and personal zine, or mini-artist book, inspired by the beauty of the wildflower meadow.

linocut printmaking – 30th august
participants Learned the basics of linocut. With a range of botanical materials to inspire them, Lydia guided them through the process of carving their design, inking up and printing. they experimented with a range of different colours and papers to make a collection of prints to take home.

cyanotype printmaking – 31st august
participants Joined special guests Nicole and Carlos and learn how to use photosensitive chemicals to create striking blue and white botanical prints.
The owners of the Yellow Bird Cafe, nicole and carlos drew on a wealth of experience stemming from their collaborative project Burn the Negatives, which began during the covid lockdown, and they have produced hundreds of stunning prints since.
With their help, participants learned how to prep the surface for exposure, then arranged a range of pressed flowers, leaves and grasses from the Field Shelter meadow onto their papers. they then exposed their designs to the sun to create beautiful sharp designs in striking blue and white.

tickets for these workshops cost £5 per person thanks to a grant from the haltwhistle community shops fund. without this grant, participation in these workshops would cost in the region of £35-40 per person, so we thank the haltwhistle partnership for their generosity in making arts activities more accessible for local people
