botanical casting – 20th july

description
Led by artist Lydia Brockless, make a beautiful plaster cast using natural materials. Learn how to make a simple clay-impression mould using grasses and flowers from the field, then take a highly detailed cast of your design.

field drawing – 27th July

description
In this relaxed session led by artist Lydia Brockless, you’ll be guided through a range of observational and expressive drawing exercises to help you capture the wildness of this stunning natural landscape. You’ll come away with a range of drawings in pencil, charcoal and ink.

zine making – 3rd august

description
make your own personal artist book. join writer Sarah Davy for this relaxed workshop. while sarah guides you through creative writing activities, and Lydia leads you in some simple and mindful collage and drawing exercises, you will create a unique and personal zine, or mini-artist book, inspired by the beauty of the wildflower meadow.

linocut printmaking – 30th august

description
Learn the basics of linocut. With a range of botanical materials to inspire you, Lydia will guide you through the process of carving your design, inking up and printing. You can experiment with a range of different colours and papers to make a collection of prints to take home!

cyanotype printmaking – 31st august

description
Make your own sun prints! Join special guests Nicole and Carlos and learn how to use photosensitive chemicals to create striking blue and white botanical prints.

The owners of the Yellow Bird Cafe, you might not know that they are also talented artists! Their collaborative project Burn the Negatives began during the covid lockdown, and they have produced hundreds of stunning prints since.

With their help, you will learn how to prep your surface for exposure, then arrange a range of pressed flowers, leaves and grasses from the Field Shelter meadow onto your paper. You’ll then expose your design to the sun to create a beautiful sharp design in striking blue and white.

  • tickets cost £5 per person thanks to a grant from the haltwhistle community shops fund. without this grant, participation in these workshops would cost in the region of £35-40 per person, so we thank the haltwhistle partnership for their generosity in making arts activities more accessible for local people.
  • two tickets per workshop are available free of charge. these are aimed at those wanting to take part but facing financial barriers to doing so. If you would like to enquire about a free ticket, please email fieldshelter.arts@gmail.com and tell us which workshop(s) you’d like to attend. You will need to be a resident of haltwhistle or one of its surrounding parishes, but we will not ask for proof of address or income.
  • Some workshops are being held at venues in town, and others here at the field shelter studio. for those taking place here, the timings have been lined up as closely as possible with the timetable of the AD122 bus to allow easy affordable travel from town – if you need information on how to get here, please click here
  • tickets sales are being advertised first for people living in haltwhistle, and in particular those attending any of our many community support groups, before they go on general sale. This is to ensure that those on low incomes or with other barriers to arts participation are given priority.
